The History Of Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is a pickup truck-based passenger vehicle (PPV) produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota for some Asian, African and Latin American markets.

Assembled in Durban South Africa, Asia and South America, the Fortuner is built on the well-established platform of the Toyota Hilux pickup truck. It features three rows of seats and is available in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive among others. The Fortuner is part of Toyota's IMV project which include the Hilux, Innova and the Fortuner.

A number of engine options are available depending on the country of sale, including a 2.7 liter 2TR-FE and 4.0 liter 1GR-FE V6 petrol with Variable Valve Timing and 2.5 2KD-FTV and 3.0 1KD-FTV common rail variable geometry turbocharger Diesel models.

Trim levels are G and G Luxury for rear-wheel drive diesel and gasoline, and V for four-wheel drive Diesel and gasoline. The common rail turbo intercooled diesel has functional scoop on its hood.

The model isn't sold in North America, but the related and similarly-sized FJ Cruiser is sold instead.

In 2007, Toyota Thailand dropped four-wheel drive gasoline model, replaced by two-wheel drive gasoline until now.

This car is the best selling in its category (SUV/ PPV) in the Philippines and Thailand.

Malaysia

The Toyota Fortuner is sold in Malaysia in 2 variants – 2.7V and 2.5G.

The 2.7V carries a 4-cylinder, in-line 16-valve, DOHC, VVT-i petrol engine, with a maximum output of 118 kW at 5200 rpm and maximum torque of 241 Nm at 3800 rpm. 2.7V is available only in 4-speed automatic transmission with ECT.

The 2.5G has a DOHC Turbo diesel engine with a maximum output of 75 kW at 3600 rpm and maximum torque of 260 Nm at 1600-2400 rpm. 2.5G was initially available with a 5-speed manual transmission only, but for the 2009 model year facelift it has been replaced by a 4-speed auto.

Philippines

The Fortuner was introduced in 2005 to supplant the RAV4, and the Land Cruiser.

It is sold in 3 variants, a 2.5 G, 2.7 G, and 3.0 V

The 2.5 G has a diesel engine with 4x2, majority of Fortuners were sold with this engine. It was criticized for having an underpowered engine 102hp engine@3,400 RPM, considering it's weight. The 2.7 G has a gasoline engine that develops 159hp@5,200rpm and 244N.m@4,000rpm of torque, its a 4x2 variant, and is cheaper by a thousand pesos from the G Diesel but notorious for being a gas guzzler. The 3.0 V variant has a common-rail D4-D diesel engine with 161hp @3,400rpm and with 343N.m@3,200rpm of torque, its a four-wheel drive, and 4-Speed Automatic transmission with Super ECT.

The Fortuner is currently the Philippines best selling SUV, despite the high sticker price, and besting compact SUVs like the Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson and even sizemate Ford Everest.
