2004 Nissan Presage sometimes it goes like it is starving for fuel problems

Report a Problem

Name:Pixie
Location:New Zealand, Waikato, Hamilton
Vehicle:Nissan Presage
Year:2004
General comments:It is not a fuel problem because I have had fuel lines checked twice by different mechanics while the problem was happening.
One mechanic said it is a solanoid. It cleared the problem for awhile.
Problems:This happens out of the blue as I am driving along. The best way to describe is when I go up a hill, but this also happens when I am driving along a flat road...

When I go up a hill I push down on the accelerator (fuel) pedal to go up the hill.

The rev counter flicks between 4000rpm and 2000rpm when I accelorate.(Thats when I know that something is up)

The motor sounds like it is racing and the vehicle itself slows right down and tries to die.
(Even though the motor is reving and making a sound like it is going fast, and the rev counter is flickering up and down)

I can smell rubber burning when I stop the vehicle and open the bonnet.

Several times I have been driving along slowly at around 30kmph and the vehicle has just died on me. I accelerated to stop it dying but that made no difference. Once it dies like that I havent had the problem again for awhile.

Please note that the rev counter goes down when I try to get the revs up.

I have a Nissan Liberty, what the Presage replaced. This same problem started to happen to me while driving. Engine racing and revving but the car lost speed. I had a Japanese friend search this problem on Japanese Nissan car forums. it turns out the CVT transmission was crap. I took it to the dealer just in time before the warranty ran out and it was replaced free of charge, over $3000 for the part, they did rip me off for the labor. about $500. So now I have a new transmission. The CVT is not good, it starts to fail at very early use or light duty. My car is a minivan used to move the family, not a race car under high loads. Check the CVT
