my rx7 review 1989

Vehicle:Mazda RX-7
Year:1989
Modification:GTUs
General comments:By far one of the best sportcars "out of the box" from Mazda. This car came with all the go fast goodies stock: aluminum hood, aluminum 4 piston front brakes, 4.30 rear end, 16" wheels, LSD, heavy duty suspension, no sunroof, no power windows, rear wiper, etc. All the fat of the Turbo II has been pared off, leaving you with a raw, purpose built machine.
I've had mine for almost 4 years now and have virtually no problems with it. If you are looking for a no-frills handling scalpel for the street, the GTUs is it. They only made approximately 900-1100 of these models between 1989 and 1990, making it one of the rarest RX-7 models out there. Your work will be cut out trying to find one. It took me about 3 months and I had to travel 700+ miles to get it. Is it worth it? Hell yes!
The GTUs is all about handling. The steering, suspension and chassis are dialed in for it. The 8500 rpm redline of the normally aspirated 13B rotary motor is something to experience. The linear power delivery makes balancing the GTUs on the edge of adhesion easy and predictable.
I've driven the car in almost stock configuration at open track events, autocross, and numerous late night backroad runs. It can hold its own.
What things have gone wrong with the car:*Gas mileage (About 16mpg with my lead foot)
*Little to no torque (Drag racing? No thanks.)
*If something does go wrong, good rotary mechanics are hard to find.
*Substandard electronics (Wiper switch, clock)
Previous car:This is my first RWD car. I wish I had gotten into RWD cars earlier in High School!
