The Honda SMX (Japanese: ホンダ・S-MX, sometimes written as S-MX) is a mini van released in 1997. It features a B20B engine and front wheel drive for the RH1 chassis, and 4WD for the RH2 chassis, all with a 4 speed automatic gear box. The SMX takes the larger Honda Stepwgn and shortens the wheelbase to provide a more youthfull appearance, similar to efforts from Scion xB and the Nissan Almera Tino.

Bench seats front and rear all fold down into a double bed. With a 4 speed automatic transmission and column shift it is a breese to drive, and nippy too. Tuned for Japanese city driving it is quick off the mark. Driver and passenger air bags, electric mirrors and windows, most with air conditioning, results in a very user-friendly mini MPV. To save weight, it only has 3 doors (2 front and 1 on the near side)and a tailgate hinged at the top. Some of the RH1 chassis S-MX's have the additional name "Lowdown", which explains exactly what thy are - low, usually with the larger 17" wheels.
