A common problem with ABS system is that the sensors on the wheels stop sensing. Each wheel has a cable running to a little insulated housing which contains the sensor. It 'sees' a toothed ring attached to the rotating part of the wheel. If there is a build up of dirt and mud on the sensor it can't see the toothed ring. Cleaning out the dirt can make a big difference.
