overheating 4M40 engine |
November 22, 2010, 2:17 pm from: ahmed |
4m40 is a good engine but needs regular careful maintenance. possible reasons for hard start. 1)you need to tune your injectors and injector pump timing 2)turbo seals are gone (and u need to check intake piping for oil), which causes oil to leak into the cylinders giving hard start when cold 3)valve seals are gone leaking oil into the cylinder(combustion chamber) check the compression using a compression gauge to see if your rings are gone...question...is it burning white smoke or blue smoke? what is your oil consumption per 1000km? it should be 1 litre/1000km. Be using castrol oil, it is a bit thick and the viscosity is good. problem in kenya is that no one knows how to tune the turbo and wastegate. 4m40 is a power house and should run cool at most times, except very long uphill roads. and do not be cheated to exchange your engine by the garages in industrial area or ngara, they will mess your car. ...and please dont buy fake parts form kirinyaga road, you will just mess up your engine big time. invest in an EGT gauge, it will save you many problems by giving u early warnings |

I changed that troublesome 4m40 engine and put a 5L Toyota Diesel Engine... with the mechanical diesel injector pump. Honestly the thing runs better than the 4m40 only that the 4m40 is more powerful on uphill but the 5L doesnt overheat and is reliably used by the long distance matatus (Toyota Shark). The 5L engine is non turbo but quite good in power and reliability. I still use the pajero's manual transmission which was combined by some Sikh Engineer in Nakuru. Those cold starts and engine problems u talk about are now a history with the 5L engine. |

I need your help concerning my Mitsubishi L200 Warrior-4m40 Engine. Ive had small problems with it lately. The head gasket has been replaced last week. and now am having an issue with the radiator fluid. when am running on highway the temperature rises and fluid from the radiator flows in the expansion tank. The tank is 3/4 full with the fluid. Once the engine has cooled down the fluid is supposed to flow back in the radiator, but it DOESNT. the fluid stays in the expansion tank itself. ive tried replacing the Rad Cap. No use. Kindly help me out please. |

I have V46 4M40 2.8 Diesel turbo intercooler for Mitsubishi Pajero, model 1994. I have the problem of the engine. The problem was, when i get started the engine less then 1 minute and continue to drive my car, my engine will suddenly stop after 5-10 minute. So, I need to re-start the engine again and at the end the engine is running Ok. But, I try to do different way method. Start the engine for a few minute, roughly 5-10 minutes and then continue drive my car, should be no problem. Engine, everthing is Ok. I have changed my fuel filter as well. No leaks on the fuel line. Heater resistor from the engine is new. Also performed cleaning into my fuel injector as well. Regularly do service maintenance into my engine. Please advice... |

hi guys.. Im using a v32 pajero, year 1997, petrol. Now the carburator start to problem and when driving i only can go around 60 - 70 km/h. I'll try to find a carburator from a half cut, but cannot find it. Can any one suggest me another second option to solve my problem? And the second thing, if i want to change the engine to diesel turbo, which one model/engine is suitable with? And please advice me about the maintenance for the engine. Thank you. |

I have a 1996 V46 (4M40 engine with turbo). Last month my engine overheated and blew a radiator hose. I towed the car to Nairobi and had it checked. I have been adviced that it is not wise to overhaul the engine (replace cylinderhead gasket, sleeves and rings) but rather I should get a replacement engine. Does anyone know where I can get a good engine? (with some form of warranty). |

I have a 1996 V46 (4M40 engine with turbo)which has served me very well. Thing is, its started having power loss issues and up a hill if i slow down to a 20kph or less, on start up again the thing doesn't literally move. It takes alot of accelerating and it goes up slowly with alot of smoke. Anyone experienced such? How did you sort it out? Is it turbo or diesel injector issues? Regards, Kenn |

I had the same issues and upon diagnosis the culprits were the injector pump and the turbo. I am still looking for second hand replacements as new ones are unbelievably expensive. But nozzles too can cause the symptoms you have. |

I am wondering which non Turbo diesel engine can fit perfectly in a 1992 V44 Mitsubishi Pajero-Its orignal Engine was 4D56 Turbo but Turbo had an issue. This L200 engine can it fit--where in Kenya can i get a good ex-japan engine at fair price. Are there other modern engine non Turbo which can fit in my old beauty Pajero? What causes the back pressure in most Mitsubishi vehicles making them overheat--how can it be resolved |

Hi Richard. How have you been since CARE Kisumu? Nice to see you here. I've had a 1996 V46 2.8ltr snow athlete edition for almost 2 years now. Back pressure is mostly caused by a dirty radiator and water pipes. Overheating is also caused a burnt cylinder-head gasket in addition to the usual culprits, punctured radiator, little or no water/coolant in the cooling system. You need a Mitsubishi specialist to maintain your car. I had a V44 edition right before the V46 and would advise you stick to a 4D56 engine. Get a new one and have it maintained by those who understand these types of engines. Per experience, it can be quite traumatizing if one cuts corners with these vehicles. I'm having it much easier now. Kindly call me. |

Hi Richard. Did you get your problems fixed ? I run a 4D56 Pajero Turbo. I read its service manual and tell mechanics what exactly I want done. The average mechanic in Kisumu has never put his eyes on a pajero v44/v24 service manual. contact me if your problem has not been solved. Im in Kisumu. I hope you never grounded your Pajero coz of a turbo issue which I regard too simple to solve in a 4D56. |

Gulam... There are hardly any problems with 5L engines. Very reliable. But you should put complete transmission and don't modify bell housing. Then consider a transmission without full time 4WD as your vehicle will permanently be on 4WD affecting speed. The trick is to get one that has the Transfer Case on the left. |

4m40 engine has been having oil leaks for the longest time, the air return pipe has been bringing back oil into the engine. Now these problems have persisted for so long and recently we changed the 4m40 engine and put in the Toyota 5L engine. We however modified the bell housing and retained the pajero's gear box. The 5L runs way better than the 4m40 even though it's not turbo charged. |
