2002 Toyota Gaia fuel consuption problems in Kenya

| The engine is not VVTI; but i dont think it consumes too much. -confirm the size of reserve tank when warning light comes on. -Check also size of your tires; if they are bigger than specified size might contribute to more fuel consumption. -Your driving behaviour if you rave it so much the Engine responds at the detriment of fuel. -Last but not least give it Good regular service. At least its supposed to give you 10km/litre in town and 15.5km/litre on the highway |

| My GAIA is not VVTI also, and is a 2002 model. It consumes about the same...9km per litre, or at times when driving upcountry along the highway, it consumes like 16km per litre. Initially I thought it had a problem, but I did regular servicing, and maintainance all the same. I realised it depends on driving skills and the vehicle handling also. Don't know if its true, but I observed that if I drive at a high speed,say 120 - 130m/hr, it consumes a hell lot of fuel. But with average speed say 80km/hr - 100km/hr....it comsumed 1litre to every 10 - 15km... Catherine. |

| My consumes alot. 5.5km per litre. Am now using platinum spark plugs and I thought it could reduce the huge consumption. Previously I was using iridium spark plugs and I could do 6.6 km per litre. My gaia is a 2001 model. Is there a way to better improve this performance. Thanks. Davis. |

| This is the same Zacharia above if your Gaia is of 2002-2004 then the Engine is 1AZ-FSE This is the D4 Engine and mostly available with a 4WD option Why it consumes more:- 1)in my observation 4WDs normally consume much fuel than their 2WDs. 2)The D4 don't like our high sulphur low quality gas.D4 engines use direct fuel injection system, like the GDI Mitsubishi. You may notice the following after some time: 1. It looses power during drive. 2. It shuts down when the engine is on Neutral stand 3. The fuel consumption is to high. 4. Black smokes come out of the exhaust pipe. Davis i would suggest You get a Mechanic who has handled a D4 engine to get a better explanation of the problems of this Engine. Its a problem with the fuel Injection system. |

| My gaia 2000 model has developed a problem, Gearbox is leaking Hydraulic,the so not good Mechanic says that those are seals(gearbox)i have around no seals on the market.Kindly Help. |

| I have Toyota Gaia 2002 model with 1AZ-FSE with D4 VVTi engine (same engine found in Toyota Avensis). I don't have any problem with it so far but I' am told it gives problems with this D4 function. How can I avoid this problem from affecting me before it finds me caught unaware. I always service the car every after 5000Km by changing the following; >Engine oil and oil filter >Air Cleaner >Never changed the fuel filter. >Never changed the Spark Plugs. Please Help. | Fuel consumption is determined generally by driving skills and terrains, avoid excessive raves and never shift to N while driving!!! 1AZ D4 engines consume very well on the right driving skill and also see to it servicing is on schedule, best spark plugs, 3pin iridium, V power fuel is best!!!! |

| A toyota gaia is a very good fuel server but usually when it starts consuming too much fuel eg 4kms/litre then its a simple problem and no mechanic is needed just check the map/vacuum sensor situated under the bonnet below the windscreen the sensor is attached to the fuel manifold by a small rubber hose. if this hose is broken then eureka!!! just replace it and go for a road test otherwise you would need to replace the sensor |
