2000 Toyota bB noise when a/c is turned on problems in United States

Problems: | When I push in the A/C button a noise comes from engine compartment (like bad bearing or fan), but stops if I turn the A/C off? |

When the a/c is switched on, the fan runs constantly unless you're driving at m-way speeds, reason is that there's no separate fan for the condenser (which sits right in front of the radiator), so the a/c uses the same fan that cuts in to keep the coolant temperature right in congested, stop/start traffic. My late gen 1 bB (an NCP 30 built in June 2005, just before production of the gen 2 started) behaves in exactly the same way, it's supposed to do that. |
